Came in with intense contractions and got told I was only 3cm and they had just given me another sweep (without asking if I wanted another one). I was screaming in pain after asking for pain killer for hours. I asked for a c- section for 3 hours, as I could feel my baby was coming quick and he was big. The staff member in charge acted like they didn’t care and didn’t want to be there. In the end, the delivery midwives did a brilliant job and I had to deliver naturally with forceps. I had a cut and I still got a 3rd degree tear. I feel this would have been avoided if the staff in charge at the beginning had listened to me, as we all know our own bodies the best. I now have long lasting injury and day to day tasks that I can’t do.
My son was rushed off to NICU and diagnosed later with DS. In the end, the NICU and midwives did excellent. A big shout out to a one staff member, who has a heart of pure gold and I hope she gets all the recognition she ever will and does deserve! I couldn’t have done it all without her. On the same day as the delivery, I felt a little left out and I had to keep asking for help (waiting hours for help). I don’t think the injuries I had sustained during delivery where clearly noted down in my notes. I do feel each mother should be treated the same after birth. I only stayed one night and discharged myself due to feeling so uncomfortable on the bed. I couldn’t sit for about 1-2 months. During the one week my son spent in hospital, I couldn’t stay more than three hours a day, due to being in too much pain. I wasn’t allowed any stronger pain killers, other than being told to wait for the paracetamol to kick in... this did not work. I couldn’t wait to leave, but felt so guilty not being able to bond with my son that first week of life due to my injuries. I’m now 5 months postpartum and still struggling daily with my injuries this has seriously affected my mental health and I feel that I don’t want anyone else to go through any unnecessary injuries like mine. I feel these could be prevented with more understanding and more care from those who need to do so in this sector, and for more mothers to be listened to, as they know their own bodies.
