"Breast feeding support"

About: Raigmore Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I was admitted to ward 10 - Raigmore Hospital around 2 weeks prior to having my Son. I was them moved to ward 9B for 9 days after having him, whilst he was in SCBU. Throughout my stay, the breast feeding support team ( Kareen & Arlene) were absolutely invaluable. They supported me throughout my stay and nothing was ever too much to ask. This is my first born, so feeding myself is completely new to me and I needed all the support I could get. Kareen and Arlene started off by supported me with colostrum harvesting, a few days before he was born, which was a big thing for me as I knew he would be going to special care (5 weeks premature)! Once I had my son, they were there at the ready helping me to express (my baby was taken to SCB as planned).

They gave me all the support and advice I could possibly need. Once my son was ready to feed from the breast, Kareen and Arlene were there again to support me with this. I had some difficulties trying to get baby to latch but nothing that the girls couldn't support me with. We are now home and still feeding brilliantly. Without the support of the breast feeding support team I woild never have been able to feed myself. I would have had to use formula and bottle feed. I am so very glad these Kareen and Arlene were there to support me, wouldn't be where we are today without them. Thank you so very much.

Dear K-la1989,

Congratulations on the birth of your wee boy and thank you so much for taking the time to tell us of your experiences while in Raigmore, I will pass this onto the staff as they will be delighted to hear that they supported you so well while admitted.

Having a preterm baby is not easy and you have really demonstrated how hard it is and also how beneficial it is to have the right support at the right time. Starting with the colostrum harvesting prior to the birth is wonderful to read about as this has been a really great project within Highland. You have described the importance of then getting support with expressing and then effective attachment as your baby progressed. I am so happy to read how you felt this support was invaluable for you.

Thank you again for sharing your story and well done for continuing to feed.

Kind regards

Karen Mackay
