"First experience of surgery"

About: North Devon District Hospital / General surgery North Devon District Hospital / Theatres North Devon District Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

Having previously only been in hospital for x-rays or bandaging a badly sprained foot, I was apprehensive to have a procedure which might ental being 'put out'. However, I need not have worried and took offer of injection and watching the whole procedure.

I appreciated having anaesthetic options explained and the patience of staff to my questions on the way to theatre.

In theatre, I was fascinate by all the monitors including a view in green of my insides and was told I had a wrinkly pipe!

First recovery station I was in a large room with other beds on view and had my arm wrapped for BP monitor every 5 mins, this was for about 2 hours.

Then wheeled to recovery (where I had started) and so glad to have tea & toast (only disappointment - No brown bread).

I was told I had to have a pee before being allowed to leave - but not an option - never been legless before even when I could feel my feet. I could not control them. Would have same again but asked for less.

I enjoyed my experience, rather nice having all those people concentrating on me and having 3 lovely people grab me and whip me back on the bed when I tried to get out - was really fun - Yes I have a warped humour!

I have not found out how to reduce waste but as you say "or draw" - Here are my 2 sketches of my hospital procedure. I have waived my right to copy right so if any use you can use them. For re-assurance those who are  nervous or turn into cards to sell for Barnstable Hospital Friends.

Dear artist40

Many thanks for leaving such positive feedback regarding your "first experience of surgery". I can understand your apprehension having only ever been in hospital previously for more minor reasons. However, I am so pleased that you found all the staff to offer you explanations and reassurance at all times. Thank you so much for sending in your wonderful pictures of your time in theatre and recovery. I will pass on your feedback to Mr Misra, our Lead Consultant Urologist.

Thank you again for taking the time and trouble to leave your feedback which I am sure will help to reassure other patients.

May I take this opportunity of wishing you well for any further treatment you may need at NDDH.

Kind regards

Paula

Dear artist40.

Thank you so much for your wonderful description of your time in Theatre. We are so glad it all went well and that you are on the mend.

I think Brown bread must have been a popular choice that day I am afraid. I will print off these drawings and put them on our board for them to see. I am sure they will find them amusing.

Best of luck for your continued recovery.

Maureen.
