"Cancellation of procedure"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Urology (Ward 6)

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter has been having recurring urine infections for two years. She received a letter advising of surgery being carried out today at Monklands hospital.

Having been for a Covid test and asked to self isolate until procedure she booked a week off work (she’s self employed). The hospital phoned and asked if she could come in earlier than scheduled this morning. When arrived she was booked in, gowned up to be told that as she was to get a general anaesthetic the operation would be cancelled today unless she agreed to an alternative procedure with a local anaesthetic which she refused.

The details of her procedure have been spoken about many times before today and the medical team were well aware that the procedure needed a general anaesthetic.

My daughter is totally distraught being sent home to wait for new appointment time. She has lost a weeks pay for absolutely nothing. Why was she phoned to come early for procedure for it to be cancelled.

I know the NHS under major pressure but so are we all and after two years of illness this seems totally unacceptable. The impact this recurring illness has on her mental health is concerning and as a mum I’m really worried about how this will affect her.

Dear Jillsy

I'm so sorry to hear about you and your daughters recent experience. This is clearly not the standard of care and communication that we aspire to and I can only apologise for that.

It would be helpful if you could contact my Patient Affairs colleagues so that we can understand the issues in more detail, so that your feedback can be used with staff to review practice to avoid this happening in the future.

You can contact them PatientAffairs.Monklands@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk or Tel No: 01698 752300

Kind regards

Jean
