"Disability/mobility awareness"

About: Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital / General medicine Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital / X-ray and Scans

(as a service user),

I was recently referred by my GP to the Haematology Department at the  Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and this was worrying. The consultant said I had to have a bone marrow extraction and a PET scan, in the following couple of weeks. I did advise the 2 departments I had a disability & mobility issues and I use a walker aid. The staff at these departments were great generally, caring and respectful. But I found they didn't take into account that once I was on the lowered gurney/bed, I had a lot of difficulty moving into other positions, other than lying down. At the bone marrow extraction, I ended up with my knees wedged into a wall, and that was painful.

I also had a difficult experience while having knee X-rays in summer 2021 for similar reasons, the member of staff seemed to have no empathy and understanding that I was finding it difficult to position myself the way they were asking.
