"Praise for good care in busy times"

About: Royal Stoke University Hospital / General surgery

(as a service user),

I was admitted to the surgical admissions unit (SAU) following complications from surgery five days prior. The wait for an ambulance was 90 mins and the wait in A and E four hours. After being admitted to SAU things went from strength to strength.

Pain relief for me was a priority, although due to doctor shortages this took a long while. A nurse finally on SAU managed to get a nurse practitioner to prescribe me some morphine and ensured by the end of her night shift she would  get me admitted on to a ward. After being admitted to ward 102, I was seen by a consultant and listed for emergency surgery.

My stay in ward 102 was 5 days. All the staff including the surgeon Mr Balaji, all the nurses (Tancy, Laura, Jocelyn, Lea) and many others, nursing associates and health care support workers... too many to mention but Sam, Sylvia, and in particular Margaret who was my first point of call post surgery, all treated me with kindness, compassion and professionalism.

As I am a nurse myself within the NHS, I found it humbling to see such good care in practice. Their care was no different toward me as many did not know what my profession was. Nothing was too much trouble. I felt like I was consulted with in regard to my care plan and felt the care was individual to my needs.

The whole of the ward from those already mentioned to the volunteers, domestic staff, porters etc should all be praised for maintaining such good care in such busy times.

Thank you all so very much.
