"Exceptional and surprising outcomes"

About: Kilbryde Hospice / Complementary Therapy

(as the patient),

I was diagnosed with MSA and had been depressed, sad and anxious since diagnosis. My Parkinson’s nurse referred me to the complementary therapy team at kilbryde hospice foot and leg massage eased my muscle cramps and my toes were less painful. Beautiful essential oils were combined specifically for my condition. Each week My therapist, Stacey, would provide a wonderfully relaxing massage in a restful setting at my home. I thought my days of experiencing massage therapy were over because I was not able to visit a salon. However Stacey used relaxing music to set the scene for me to completely relax and ease my anxiety . At times, she offered guided meditations, information on essential oil treatment and provided information about professional bodies that could be I’d use in the future.  The muscles in my lower legs began to feel relief and felt lighter after treatments.

However one of the most surprising results of the treatment was the emotional and mental benefit I experienced. I began to be reminded of how enjoyable periods of life could be, however short. I started using the products the hospice provided to reembark on a process of self-care. I found someone who was a mobile hairdresser. I found a mobile nail therapist and on occasion I even wore a little makeup and got dressed up for friends visits. In many ways I attribute the care and compassion I received to help get me somewhat back to myself. It didn’t change my diagnosis but it did offer periods of happiness and some emotional healing.

In my opinion, this service embodies the integrated holistic care that the NHS strives toward and more resources should be allocated. This would be cost effective in allowing greater home treatment and would relieve pressure in both physical and mental health services. I hope to continue the good work I have started with this treatment and remain indebted to the complementary team at kilbryde hospice.

Hello Gladgran,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience of the Complementary Therapy service at Kilbryde Hospice, it means a great deal to our staff and our service!

You have expressed how "depressed, sad and anxious" you were feeling about your diagnosis before your therapies commenced and what benefit you feel you gained from them. With physical effects of "muscles in my lower legs began to feel relief and felt lighter after treatments" and bringing periods of "happiness and some emotional healing". It is so powerful to hear this in your own words and I am delighted to hear that your sessions with Stacey helped you "completely relax and ease my anxiety".

It is lovely to hear that you received such a range of benefits from your Complementary Therapy sessions and you have described beautifully the range of things that can be included such as meditation, aromatherapy products for home use and hands on therapies.

We seek to empower you to find things that work for you, to address how you are feeling and improve your sense of overall wellbeing. I am delighted that you have taken this so much to heart and have invested further in yourself by booking other professionals to come to your home and provide services such as hair and nails that are helping you feel uplifted.

We are passionate about providing Complementary Therapies as part of the integrated and holistic care that we offer at Kilbryde Hospice and feedback such as yours is invaluable.

Kind regards

Janice
