"Complete lack of empathy"

About: Victoria Hospital / Early Pregnancy Assessment Service

(as other),

I am so angry at the Early Pregnancy Unit at Victoria Hospital. My daughter in law and son suffered a miscarriage today and EPC could not be more disinterested if they tried, we found the nurse was rude, un sympathetic and we felt they were definitely not interested in what my daughter in law was going through. To put you in the picture my daughter in law had never been pregnant in her life did not know what to expect, she had been phoning and messaging myself as I worked in maternity a good few years ago about her symptoms but at that point she wasn't bleeding.

She started bleeding in the early hours of the morning and had really bad cramping pains in her abdomen. My son was at work so he came home so they could either go to hospital if needed or  phone NHS24.  My son wanted her to go to hospital but she thought she would save an appointment and phone NHS 24 who in turn got EPC to call her back.

I listened to the phone call and the only answer she got once she had told the staff member on the call what was happening was: not much we can do, you'll not be getting a scan so just keep your scan appointment on your date.  Do another Pregnancy test in two weeks.

My daughter practically begged for a scan and still none was forth coming. In the end they paid privately to get one done and that staff member couldn't have been nicer, an absolute Gem of a girl couldn't do enough for the couple  even to the extent she dropped everything she was doing to come and scan them.

This is their first and no empathy was shown to the couple at all. Totally disgusting if I do say. Think the staff need to go to a course on empathy and Care. As NO CARE was given at any time by NHS  Fife EPC it was as if whats done is done move on.

Sorry Victoria Hospital EPC Clinic you need to brush up on your people skills, I would not dream of talking to a person as they did, my son and daughter in law have vowed they will never go near EPC in the future and they will go private for any scans that they need.

Angry, hurt and upset 😡 Grandmother here. My daughter couldn't write this as she is so upset so I said I would do it for. Pull up your socks ladies your patients deserve more help than they are getting at the present .

Do to others as you would want done unto you.

Thank you for your feedback. We value all feedback both negative and positive. I am sorry that your Son & Daughter-in-law have not had a good experience through their contact with NHS Fife's EPC. I will feed this back to staff.

However, if your Son or Daughter-in-law would like this matter to be investigated further I would advise them to contact patient relations on fife.patientrelations@nhs.scot. This would allow me to identify the staff involved and investigate the circumstances on their behalf.

Kind Regards

Claire Massey
