"Dementia patients need extra support"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a relative),

My Mother in Law was taken by Ambulance in the early hours of the morning from her home where my wife, her daughter is her full time 24/7 carer. On arrival, my wife was told that she would have to wait outside the hospital whilst observations were being done, even though she explained her mother has mixed dementia and cannot communicate.

A little later, I received a call at home from the Registrar asking to speak to my wife to ask if her mother can communicate easily!!!! I advised him that no she cannot which is why her daughter is with her.

My wife managed to get into the hospital when somebody else went in and asked to see the registrar and from then on was allowed to be with her mother.

Hospital staff need to realise that dementia patients need extra support than the average person when coming to hospital. In my opinion as long as covid precautions are being taken they should allow a carer/family member to accompany the person with Dementia. Its very upsetting all round when you are separated.
