"I was admitted to Cardiology Ward ..."

About: Bristol Royal Infirmary

(as the patient),

What I liked

I was admitted to Cardiology Ward 18 for an ablation for Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. The nursing staff were fantastic and very reassuring. They admitted me the night before the procedure, and gave me tea and toast as I hadn't had a chance to eat before i came in. The surgical team explained the procedure well, and took into account that I was nervous about the operation. The operation was thankfully straightforward. The nurses answered questions I had during my sedated local anasthetic operation. The surgeon gave me a print out of my ECG to take home. The ward was clean, the staff were caring, the food was nice (school dinner-like) and the other patients were friendly.

What could be improved

If bed pans could be redesigned that would be a plus, as they are tricky for the novice to use, especially if you have to keep your leg straight due to surgery through the femoral artey.

The nursing staff were working long hours (one was doing a 14 hour shift) - this didn't dimish the quality of their care but I did feel sorry for them.
