"Great Rehabilitation at Lightburn"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Elderly Medicine (12, 14, 18, 23, 29, 30, 32, 33,35 ,39 & 53) Lightburn Hospital

(as a service user),

My mum had a fall early in February due to months of illness being undiagnosed by her GP she has several underlying health complications, she unfortunately managed to fall and fracture her hip. Mum spent 4 weeks in GRI. It was hard for her as due to her age being in her late 60's she was classed as "elderly" but my mum could easily pass for 50. The care she received however from the staff was excellent although she felt very lonely and isolated and through no fault of the hospital the ward had to be closed twice due to covid scares.

Once mum's infections were under control they tried to get her to walk as she had been unable to do so as she was in pain ( several scans etc, being told it wasn't fractured then it was then it wasn't) and after a few weeks it was suggested that mum be transferred either to Stobhill or Lightburn for some Physio Rehab as they felt the physios at GRI had did all they could and jusy didn't have the time to spend with her, at one point mum was advised they thought she wouldn't walk again a very scary thought at the time.

We agreed as a family to try the Rehab and I must say I can't praise the staff highly. Mum is due for discharge this week, she is having some new equipment delivered, the doctors have reviewed her medication and made adjustments something which has not been looked at in a long time. Most importantly they will be arranging at home Physio to help get her walking back on par as not 100% there yet.

Again thanks to staff, nurses, doctors OT and physio for helping mum back on her feet. If I had one criticism of the hospital in general it needs modernisation. It seems like its been forgotten and the poor staff are having to put up with hand me down equipment etc, tiny televisions for the patients to watch and it just gives the whole place an old-fashioned feel to it.

Dear Julzq35

Thank you so much for letting us know about your mum's time in hospital. It must have been so worrying for her being told at such a young age that she may not walk again, and I am delighted that she has done well and been able to get back home. I'm really pleased that her stay in rehabilitation was such a positive one, it is so heartening for the team to get such lovely feedback and I'll make sure they all get to hear it.

Thank you also for your comments about the physical ward area, I absolutely agree that the surroundings are not as modern as those in the GRI. I have spoken to our lead nurse about what you have said and she will reply shortly.

Again, thank you for your feedback and I hope that your mum's progress continues with the physiotherapy at home

Dear Julzq35

Thanks very much for getting in touch. I’m sorry to hear about your mum’s fall, however I’m glad to hear that the care your mum received from the staff in Lightburn was excellent. I’m pleased to hear that your mum is being discharged and that we were able to arrange physiotherapy to assist with her rehabilitation at home.

Thank you for your feedback about our hospital, we are always looking at ways to improve our services and facilities for patients.

Thanks again

Best wishes

Ann
