I’ve been a patient previously (last May) and had been promised changes to the food service - this still hasn’t happened. The vegetarian options NEVER change - and sometimes food dishes appear that were never ordered. If you’re gluten free, you are offered cornflakes or bread with jam or a banana (and told that the kitchen only do toast at night). I’ve never chosen bread for my breakfast! Firstly, patient choice is non-existent.
Secondly, the food is inedible. Each meal is stodgy and tastes of nothing.
Thirdly, I was in hospital for 3 days and had to have jacket potato for each lunch and dinner as it was the only decent thing available to eat. So anyone who is in for longer than 1-2 days will be begging relatives to bring in meals just to have a break from the monotony.
I didn’t get anything to eat on the first day because I was admitted to A&E in the afternoon and moved to a ward after meal time. The staff ordered me some food and had to chase the kitchen up to an hour later. I’d have been happy with a sandwich, instead I got toast.
Why is this such a problem? Why is it apparently so difficult to offer decent choices to their patients? Other hospitals manage to do it. I’d be happy to be part of any patient forums on this, but don’t say you’ve implemented a change when you haven’t.
