"Treated disrespectfully, and no follow up for my pain"

About: General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as a service user),

I called my practice for a call with the doctor after a hospital admission via ambulance for acute abdominal pain which is a new medical condition I have been suffering from recently.

On receiving the telephone consultation with the doctor, I was met with a disrespectful tone and manner and no continuation of treatment for the pain I am still having almost fortnightly. This has resulted in me having to call NHS 24 again unfortunately after having another episode of this severe pain.

I was then told by the doctor that another doctor (whom I have never heard of) would call me the following Monday but I received no follow up call on the Monday as advised.

I really felt the doctor's attitude during the phone call did not live up to the NHS Values treating patients with “dignity“ and “respect“ and in fact found it to be the complete opposite which made me feel disappointed and as though I will just have to live with this pain which has now gone from acute to chronic.

After discussing my experience with my family we felt it was important to post this experience on Care Opinion to voice our concerns as this service really fell short of what I would expect from a GP who should be putting the patient at the heart of what they do rather than to basically ridicule them with a condescending and patronising tone and no further investigation/treatment for something so serious.

I know that another bout of this severe abdominal pain will result in another ambulance admission and it is only a matter of time when our NHS emergency services are already under so much pressure which I feel guilty about but feel I have no other alternative as I have had no pain management or advice from my GP at all.

Dear JMcL

Thank you for taking the time to share your story. I am so sorry that you have been left feeling disrespected, disappointed and that you have had no follow up regarding your chronic pain. As GP’s are independent contractors with a separate feedback and complaints system I would suggest speaking to your Practice Manager to discuss your concerns. (GP’s are not registered to respond directly to feedback through Care Opinion). If you don't feel comfortable contacting the Practice Manager, you can contact the Patient Advice and Support Service (PASS). This is an independent service which provides free and confidential advice to patients about NHS healthcare. The service is provided by the Citizens Advice Bureau. The help line number is 0800 917 2127 and this is the website: www.patientadvicescotland.org.uk

Kind Regards

Nicole
