"Inaccurate information about blood donation"

About: NHS Blood and Transplant

(as a service user),

In December I received a text from NHS BT saying "Your blood type is vital for our winter stock build. We've space for donors with no appointment at Shepherds Bush Donor Center this week, so do come if you can”

I showed up at that donor center to donate but the staff refused to take me in saying that they did not do walk in appointments. I explained that I had received the text but they did not believe me. I showed them the text but they said they could not read it, so I read it out loud. Even after that they kept claiming that they were not doing walk in and that following that text I should have booked a "walking spot" on the app (which I had never heard of and other NHS BT staff have confirmed is not a thing) and started speaking in a mean way to me.

I told the staff that I had PTSD from poor NHS care in the past and that I would get distressed if they kept stating that a walk-in appointment was not planned, even though I had a text on my phone clearly saying that I had been invited to a walk in, and I had shown them that text. They got another staff to talk to me, who confirmed that they had free appointment spot but that their IT system did not allow them use it and that I should call or go to the app right now to book a spot. The app does not work on my phone and I had no reason to waste phone credit to fix the mistake (sending me a text with inaccurate info/refusing to have any provision for walking) they had made. The staff member agreed to book the appointment for me and went away to make a call and managed to book a slot. They came back saying that I would have to wait for a while, which I said I was happy to do, and that they would be coming back soon with the pre-donation questionnaire for me to fill.

Instead they came back but said I could only donate if I was calm - which I was and I told them so. They went away again saying they would bring me the questionnaire but next another colleague came and accused me of not being calm (I had been sitting calmly on a chair the whole time not moving nor talking to other donors.) although I was sobbing a little from all the stress and disrespect the staff had put me through so far. They became more threatening and kept saying they do not do walk-in appointments and refused to acknowledge the text I had received or the donation slot that their colleague had just booked for me.

Despite me being calm and sitting down the staff involved a security guard. The guard read the text and went to talk to the staff but the staff still refused to acknowledge it. I said that I had PTSD and that seeing someone in uniform was distressing for me but they didn't leave. The staff then threatened to call the police, despite me having come to donate blood at their request and complying with all their requests (to wait and to sit in a specific place away from other donors)

This wasted so many hours of my life and caused me great distress for days. It is not the first time NHS BT has shown little respect for donors but they should not be threatening a vulnerable person. Other NHS BT staff have read the text I received and confirmed that if they received that themselves they would understand it as meaning that they could show up as "walking"/no appointment.

NHS BT needs to stop treating donors like walking blood bags, start giving out accurate information in all their communication (even automated texts), as well as acknowledge and fix their own mistakes instead of blaming donors or letting their mistake impact the donors or expect donors to fix their mistakes.
