"Summerfield ward and neonatal"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Neonatal Unit (Special Care Baby Unit) Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care)

(as a service user),

My daughter was admitted to the neonatal unit at Aberdeen maternity hospital 1 week after she was born because of jaundice. What was a very scary and unexpected event for us, was made so much easier to deal with because of the amazing care from the staff in neonatal and Summerfield. The care, love and support we received from everyone was exceptional but we would especially like to thank midwives Lynn, Katie and Jodie, and  HCSW Lauren, Kate and Kellie in Summerfield who's kind words meant the world. Also a huge thank you to Jackie who works as a domestic in Summerfield. Every time she came into room 10 where I was, she checked I was OK, asked if I needed anything and made me feel very well looked after! Staff nurses Lynda, Zoe, Shelby and Catriona in Neonatal did an amazing job of caring for both of us during our stay. Alice, one of the doctors in Neonatal, was kind, gentle and spoke to me with such a caring manner that I went from being a sobbing wreck to being able to smile! It was so scary knowing my 1 week old was being taken to the intensive care part of the unit but it really was where she needed to be. All the staff know how to talk to us emotional parents and make it feel a little less stressful.

We will be forever thankful to Claire from the team Violet community team. She wasn't my usual community midwife so the first time she met us was the afternoon that she asked for us to be reviewed by the doctors just to be on the safe side. Although our daughter was the typical yellow jaundice colour, she wasn't sleepy and was feeding well but had lost weight. It was a massive shock to everyone when her blood results showed just how poorly she was.
Our daughter is now 6 weeks old and seems to have made a full recovery. Services are so different because of the pandemic but this certainly did not impact on the care we received during my pregnancy, induction process and readmission.

Hello Collieston84,

Congratulations on the birth of your daughter! I am very glad to hear that staff across the Neonatal Unit and Summerfield ward gave you a high level of support and care during your daughters readmission for jaundice. I am pleased to hear you are both doing well and thank you very much for taking the time to provide feedback. I will ensure this is passed onto all teams.

Debbie Mackie

Senior charge midwife.
