"Emergency surgical admission"

About: Gilbert Bain Hospital / Accident & emergency Gilbert Bain Hospital / Ward 1 (surgical)

(as the patient),

I would like to start by saying a very heartfelt thank you to the a&e team and the nurses and anp on ward 1.  They all provided exceptional care, treated me with dignity and compassion, and provided sufficient communication that I was able to make informed decisions about my care.

Unfortunately, the medical team fell far short of this standard.  I was appalled to see ward rounds undertaken on mass, like something from the old nightingale wards.  I was barely spoken to and certainly wasn't given the opportunity to ask my consultant anything.  There was no respect for confidentiality - why do two other consultants need to listen to my medical information? This should not still be happening in 2022!

Thank you for taking the time to share your care experience and for the positive feedback about the accident and emergency team and the nurses on Ward 1.

I am sorry you felt that you did not have the opportunity to speak with or have the chance to ask any questions directly to the consultant responsible for your care.

Ward rounds are recognised nationally within the NHS as an essential part of patient care and medical handover. Ward rounds are one way that information can be passed between those involved in patient care. Team based ward rounds are helpful in making timely and effective decisions and ensure that other members of the team, such as junior doctors, can implement the decisions made on the ward round. It is also essential that the on-call team knows what the management plan is for patients on the ward. NHS Shetland is a teaching and training hospital so we do have trainee doctors and medical students that are included as part of the clinical team. All patient information held by the team is confidential.

There are ward based doctors or Advance Nurse Practitioners available on the ward during the day for any further assessments, discussions or communications. The team is also able to arrange meetings for any patient and their families if they would like to discuss their condition or management plans with any of the consultants.

We appreciate your honest feedback about how the ward round felt. This is something that we have taken on board and will look at improving.

Dr Pauline Wilson, Director of Medical Education on behalf of the Surgical Consultant Team
