"Deaf awareness"

About: Derriford Hospital / Neurology

(as a service user),

I had an MRI scan and had to remove my hearing aids. I did tell the staff member doing the scan that I could not hear anything without the hearing aids as I am profoundly deaf. They told me they would ask me something partway through the scan and I suggested they use a light or a sign, or write something, but they said it was not necessary, rather patronisingly I felt.

I went ahead with the scan, which if fine when you can't hear much, very relaxed, then suddenly the bed jerked, they were shouting at me and waving their arms - clearly very angry. Eventually they found a pen and paper and wrote down was I OK and asked me to cough. I did . Nurses sniggering, angry staff, me left to get my shoes on and slink out utterly humiliated again.

I would like to apologise profusely that you had to endure this during your MRI. You should have been made to feel comfortable and at ease, especially since you were unable to wear your hearing aids. The team should have been more accommodating to your needs.

I wonder if we could get some more details from you please so that we would be able to look into this further and provide this feedback to the radiographers so that it does not happen again?

Please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01752 439884 or email them at plh-tr.PALS@nhs.net and let them know you are providing more details for the service line to investigate. Our case reference is 67036 if you would be good enough to quote that.

Many thanks,

Paige Robinson
