"Fantastic care of my daughter with Covid-19"

About: General Practices in Grampian Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Medical Paediatrics (Children's Medicine)

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter had covid-19 and recently became increasingly unwell. I called the GP at Fyvie Oldmeldrum Medical Group and the GP I spoke to was fantastic. He listened to what I was saying and when I passed on the situation my daughter was experiencing (I work in healthcare so was able to give him my daughters observations) he contacted RACH and discussed with the paediatrician who advised us to attend the assessment unit to be seen.

On arrival to the assessment unit the staff showed us to a cubicle. My daughter's observations were re-checked by a very lovely student nurse. The unit was very busy so there was quite a wait to see the doctor but my daughter was happy playing and nurses were popping in and out the re-check her observations so we never felt that we had just been left. She was then reviewed by a doctor and it was advised we stay in for the night to monitor her as her oxygen levels were low.

We were moved to a room later that night and my daughter's oxygen levels failed to come up to a level the nurses were happy with so they started her on a small amount of oxygen which immediately helped and her observations became normal bar her temperature.

Thankfully by the morning she was able to maintain a normal oxygen level without the need for oxygen therapy and had perked up so we could be discharged home.

The care my daughter received was second to none. The nurses,

student nurses and doctors were all fantastic and answered any questions I had, nothing felt like too much trouble.

I know how busy they were but at no point did I feel like they didn't have time for my daughter or myself. They are all a credit to the NHS.

Dear guidecg54,

Thank you for sharing you and your daughters journey with us. It’s lovely to read about the positive interactions you had with staff from the start of your daughters journey, at the GP practice, until it was time to be discharged home. Staff will really appreciate your kind words.

It’s the most worrying time when your child is ill, but I’m glad the people you met managed to make the experience a little bit easier by keeping you informed and up-to-date.

Although it’s take a while for us to respond to your story it has been shared with the GP practice and the staff at RACH. I hope your daughter has now fully recovered from Covid.

Take care,

Kirsten
