"Feeling extremely let down"

About: Highly Specialist Services / Eating disorder service

(as a parent/guardian),

I feel extremely let down by the services. My child was diagnosed by SEDATT in June 2021. Due to them being under 16 a decision was made not to give any mental health help. We had a weekly appointment to monitor weight and blood pressure. The blood pressure monitors at St George's didn't work so in the end I took my own to the appointment .

When transferring to SEDS in July again all we got was a weekly appointment to monitor weight and blood pressure . As this was done by a different member of staff every week we took the decision to be monitored by the GP nurse. We have never had any FBT in 8 months of being on a waiting list.

I feel that if we had been given mental health support in June we could have nipped this in the bud . As it is we are now waiting for a phone call from Riverdale . I feel very frustrated , alone and extremely fearful for my child's future.

Dear Abigail

Thankyou for posting your serious concerns on Care opinion. I am sorry for the delay in me replying due to a technical problem.

I am very concerned to read your feedback. As you will appreciate it is anonymous but please can you contact Sheffield Eating Disorders Service on 0114 2716938/16930 so I can speak to you in person.

I am extremely concerned about all the points in your feedback. I am concerned that following your initial referral your young person only received physical monitoring. I am concerned to hear about faulty equipment for monitoring blood pressure, leading to you bringing your own equipment to appointments. I am concerned to hear about you being seen by different staff in our Service for monitoring so that you decided to have your young person monitored by the Practice Nurse.

I am also very concerned that you have been waiting for FBT for 8 months which is against guidelines. There are reasons for this but the lack of care you and your family has received, resulting in admission to Riverdale is a serious concern and I would like to discuss this with you to see how we can start to put things right.

Many Thanks

Maggie Young
