"Excellent care in a busy environment"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Medical Assessment Unit

(as the patient),

I was referred to the medical assessment unit by my GP surgery for tests and was quite nervous about being in a hospital. After I arrived, I had to wait for quite a while before being called- I could see the department was very busy and the staff were seeing lots of patients.

I was taken to a room and the Staff Nurse who introduced herself as Catherine apologised for my wait and proceeded to explain exactly what would happen whilst I was in the department. She listened whilst I explained what had brought me to the hospital and she had such a lovely manner that I really felt that she was listening and taking careful note of my concerns. After having my blood taken, my blood pressure checked and a heart trace, Catherine explained what would happen next and asked if I had anything I wanted to ask- although I could see that the department was very busy, I never felt that I was being rushed and felt reassured by her manner.

I was asked to wait in a large waiting room with other patients and Catherine checked on me several times, offering refreshments and a blanket when I said that I felt chilly. She was also very attentive to the older patients and offered reassurance and friendly chat to them- she showed excellent care.

After quite a lengthy wait, I was seen by a doctor but had to return the following day for more tests- before I left, Catherine came to say goodbye to me (something I had seen her do throughout my wait).

When I returned the following day, I was initially seen by a different nurse (whose name I did not catch but she was very pleasant) and  Catherine saw me in the waiting area and came over to see how I was- I thought this was a lovely, caring touch.

I was thankfully able to return home later that day and feel much better now.

Overall, I would say that I had a positive experience in this department. It is very busy and the wait was very long but the staff are patient and caring. The doctor was thorough and was happy to answer any questions I had and I felt well looked after- I commend Catherine especially for taking the time to show excellent care in such a busy environment.
