"No access to emergency neurology"

About: Leighton Hospital / Neurology Leighton Hospital / Pain Management Leighton Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My husband was admitted to Leighton hospital on recently with severe back and leg pain and immobility. He had an MRI scan on the next day and was told he didn’t need emergency surgery so no help could be sought from neurology. His neurological signs have deteriorated and he now has severe weakness in his right leg and is unable to stand up from a seated position as his leg has no power. He can walk a few steps with a walking frame but is in severe pain despite morphine and can’t stand or sit without unbearable pain so he stays lying down, as he has been for the past 8 days.

He hasn't seen a doctor for some time despite asking to be reassessed and telling his nurses his symptoms are worsening. The Senior House Officer was paged recently by his very concerned nursing team but they refused to come and assess my husband because they were very busy and nothing more could be done until the following week. He already has paresis affecting his left leg and is under the care of a neurologist from north staffs who we have not been able to access. His right leg now shows the same symptoms that affected his left leg some years ago. I feel that no one will help. The orthopod consultant says his hands are tied because of how the system works. When I asked about spinal steroid injections for the pain he told me that was a really good idea but they can’t perform that procedure at Leighton so it isn’t an option for my husband.

He says he can’t be referred to the neuro hub at Salford as his MRI doesn’t meet their criteria. I feel my husband is in a grey area where no one will take responsibility for his care. I’m worried he is going to be left permanently disabled. I feel like we are completely alone and I’m very frightened. No one seems to be willing to help despite our desperate pleas.
