"Visit to children's A&E on Saturday Night"

About: University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust

(as a parent/guardian),

We were advised to attend by NHS direct as my son was dehydrated.

There was a little delay in being able to get in as you need to press a buzzer, which is good for security, but there was no one sitting on reception. The same issue with getting out. This was a bit stressful when you have a poorly child. The reception area does not afford any confidentiality and the whole waiting room can hear you sharing your name and address.

We were seen by the triage nurse who was great with our son and explaining and agreeing what they were going to do. The atmosphere was very calm and the environment was far better than when it was at the infirmary. The healthcare was lovely but no one introduced themselves and the only person I saw wash their hands was surprisingly the doctor.

The main delay was waiting for the doctors but wasn't too excessive. The receptionist clocked off at 11: 00pm so the healthcare assistant then needed to let people in and out, surely there were other clinical duties that she should have been attending to. It was relatively quiet which was probably why the receptionist was checking out the route of their next holiday on RAC maps and doing a word search.

Clinical care provided was good.
