"Emergency surgery"

About: Whipps Cross University Hospital / Accident and emergency Whipps Cross University Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

In October 2020 I suffered severe pain in my lower abdomen. On NHS 111 I was advised to attend Whipps Cross Hospital A & E. I was kept in for observation, and the pain was relieved. After few days it was decided that I needed an operation. Part of my bowel was removed and I was given a stoma. I then spent a week or more recovering in Sage Ward.

The treatment itself was good and necessary, and the post-operative care from my stoma nurse has been excellent. Conditions in Sage Ward were unsatisfactory, and I did not feel well cared for there. The ward was noisy, particularly at night, and I came home desperately short of sleep. I tend to insomnia, and being woken in the middle of the night to have my blood pressure recorded was unhelpful. Several individual incidents, which I could detail if necessary, showed a generally uncaring attitude from the nursing staff.

I was appalled by the poor diet on offer. In a hospital of all places, one would expect healthy food.
