"Day surgery procedure"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Day surgery

(as a parent/guardian),

My son had day surgery for a lateral miniscus tear and was admitted to ward 1a. The care and treatment was first class through out: the nursing assistant, nurses, anaesthetist, physio, junior doctor and surgeon. They anticipated my son and my needs and looked after us both with care, compassion, kindness. They explained each step of care as it progressed. It is care and treatment like this that makes the NHS the most amazing and valuable organisation. Thank you so much for looking after our son so well, we are very grateful.

The only thing I thought was strange was that my son was covid screened the day before surgery. The strange thing about it was that he was told he could then go to school rather than isolate in preparation for admission. Also, I was attending the hospital admission with him yet there was no requirement for me to be covid screened.

Dear Suqna20,

Thank you so much for your warm feedback regarding your son's recent surgery. It was wonderful to read about the very personal care and treatment your son received from our theatre, anaesthetic and ward teams. It is always our pleasure to look after our young patients and their parent and I'm so glad it went so well.

As well as ensuring our teams involved see your comments, our senior management team will share their own thanks with them.

Regarding COVID-19 screening, thank you for raising this query. Our COVID screening guidance follows that of the Royal College of Paediatric and Child Health (RCPCH) which differs from the screening undertaken for example for Adults scheduled for surgery.

We test very close to the day of surgery as this will determine which Theatre pathway your child will follow as they will be having an aerosol generated procedure (AGP).

Parents are asked to undertake a lateral flow test prior to attendance. On arrival, both parent and child will be checked for symptoms.

Parents are not required to undertake a PCR test as they will be wearing a mask throughout the time they are in the hospital, and they are not having an AGP.

I trust this answers your query, however, if I can be of any further assistance in this respect, do please contact me directly, coral.mcgowan@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

Finally, on behalf of the entire team here at RHC, thank you for trusting us with the care of your son and we sincerely hope he is recovering well at home.

Best wishes

Coral
