"A visit to the orthotic department"

About: Victoria Hospital / Appliance & Orthotics

(as a carer),

Disabled parking at the front of the hospital very overcrowded, cars parked out with bays and most were failing to display a blue badge, Even being able to stop and unload the wheelchair was very difficult as the drop off area was filled with parked cars.

The hospital was pretty crowded, lots of people milling about and although everyone was wearing a mask very few were complying with social distancing.

We were due to see the staff member at 1410 and were seen within 5 mins of our appointment time.

As a young lady with complex needs she needs to have 2 carers with her at all times and the room we were shown into was very small, even in non covid times this room appeared to be very unfit for purpose it took a lot of back and forth to be able to position the wheelchair in order for the staff member to be able to make the casts we were there to have done, it was difficult for her to get out the materials she needed and difficult for us to be able to be beside our charge to support her through the process.

The staff member we saw was absolutely wonderful, she was kind and patient and did an excellent job despite the very cramped conditions she had to work in.

Dear minionsrus,

Thank you for sharing your experience on Care Opinion, I am pleased to hear that you didn’t have a long wait to be seen and found the orthotist wonderful and felt she did an excellent job, I am sure she will be pleased when I relay your comments.

We are aware of challenges with the room size, particularly for patients in a wheelchair and accompanied by carers or relatives. We are currently exploring alternative accommodation options for the Orthotics department that would allow more space and easier access. Please be assured you comments will be taken into account and used to support these future changes in the department.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.
