"Discrimination against disabled"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Had to go to A&E had to fight for my wife to go into triage with me as I've had a stroke and forget things and get confused. They allowed that begrudgingly. Had to go elsewhere to see a doc and they refused my wife to come in and didn't even have a chair for me to sit down on whilst waiting for docs. I'm in pain and struggling and as a disabled man I'm scared and confused.

Dear DeanLeanne,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us. I was saddened to read about your recent experience in the Emergency Department here at the Trust - we certainly do not want any of our patients to feel scared or confused whatever their circumstances may be. If you would like to, please contact our Patient and Family Experience Team to discuss your concerns further, they will ensure your experience is thoroughly investigated. You can contact them using the details below and quote this feedback - I have already shared it with them:

Email: rcht.patientexperience@nhs.net

Tel: 01872 252793

In the mean time, I will ensure your story is shared with the team in the Emergency Department so they can reflect on your experience and make changes where possible.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your story with us.

Best wishes,

Jess

Dear DeanLeanne,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I am sorry this was your experience of the ED team.

We are bound by current COVID guidelines in regards to visiting but there are certain exceptions to this, and I will actively encourage my staff to seek guidance from a senior member of staff if they are unsure if someone should be allowed to have relatives with them.

I would also like to offer my sincere apologies for the lack of seating available for you whilst in the ED. We have been awaiting new seating in our reception area that is covid compliant - but I will ensure my staff offer chairs to those who need them and we keep people as comfortable as possible whilst waiting to be seen.

As Jess suggested above if you would like to speak to a member of the senior ED team do contact the patient experience number and we will get in touch.

Many thanks.

Thankyou for your reply, I appreciate that as I can understand the covid rules entirely but as you say there are exemptions and if my husband was able I would have sat in the car no problems confident he would be fine by himself. I appreciate your apology, thankyou for that I feel I don't need to take it further or get in contact with anyone else as I feel this has already been done and sorted in house and I am happy with that and appreciate your replies. Thankyou.
