"Incredible care for my child"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Accident & Emergency Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Orthopaedics (Ward 3C)

(as a parent/guardian),

My child attended RHC Emergency Department after a fall onto their arm which was clearly deformed. We were meet at the ED door and taken straight to a room where  appropriate analgesia was given.  They were extremely anxious during x-ray but the staff were incredible.

On return we were referred onto an orthopaedic surgeon, with arm plastered and arrangements made to return for surgery the following day.  The communication throughout our time in ED was perfect and such compassionate care was shown.

Unfortunately the following day surgery didn't go ahead as planned due to theatre restrictions (it was a weekend and a shared theatre was being used) They had to fast for 13 hours before we were told we wouldn't be taken that day. The consultant was so apologetic, although this was not his fault but a fault with the system.

We received surgery the following day and the follow up care since has been faultless. Unfortunately my child went on to need a further surgery and Mr Smith, who operated, kept us in the loop at all times.

We, as a family, are so grateful for our NHS and send our heart filled thanks to the staff that cared for us. From the play nurse, the domestic who served us breakfast and hot cups of tea, tothe nurse on the orthopaedic ward (Rebecca I think)  We truly are grateful for you all.x

Dear saturnpk74,

I'm so grateful to you for the way you've described you and your child's experience because it really does encompass so many of our clinical services who worked together to provide the care and treatment your child needed. Thank you.

Firstly, it was good to hear that at such a worrying time, our ED and Diagnostics (X-Ray) team reacted promptly and appropriately to ensure your child's comfort and anxiety were considered. Followed by the care provided by Orthopaedics and the various theatre teams.

I was sorry that due to the level of acuity and activity your child's surgery was delayed - I can appreciate this would have been worrying for you both, as well as frustrating. I'm grateful to you for your understanding of the situation. As you so correctly note, it is our system that we need to continuously review and I would be enormously grateful if you would consider inputting or joining our theatre redesign team to share your experience of care with us. If this is something you would be happy to participate in please contact me: coral.mcgowan@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

I was delighted to read that during this time our Play Team; Domestics; Nursing and Medical teams all supported you and your child. I can share that as a result of your post, our Chief Nurse, Mandy, General Manager, Melanie and Director, Jamie have sent their personal thanks to our teams alongside your own message.

It will inevitably have been disappointing that your child required further surgery, however, I am sincerely glad that it sounds as though they are now on the mend. On behalf of all our team members who care so very much, we really do send heartfelt best wishes to your child for a speedy recovery.

Thank you so very much for taking the time to contact us, it is enormously appreciated by us all. It was our honour to care for your child.

Warmest regards

Coral
