"Professional and person-centred care"

About: Western General Hospital / Oncology

(as a service user),

On Friday I was feeling very unwell and was unsure as to what was going on. My wife contacted the cancer support line who advised us to contact both primary and secondary care where my notes would be held.

She managed to get through to the Cancer Assessment Unit (CAU) at the Western General in Edinburgh where the nurse asked if we could come in immediately. I was provided with a full range of tests on a Friday evening and although a bed had been found for me if required, was able to go home that evening, knowing that it was not a lot of things.

That is my personal story. We would like to thank the team, especially in the CAU but also X-Ray, portering, labs etc, for all their professional care and also their patient-centred kindness on a Friday evening.

Not that anyone complained, but it was evident that staff resources were extremely stretched - the quality of care was not compromised in any way.

Thank you for taking time to provide such positive feedback about the service. I will ensure the staff in CAU and the wider team involved are made aware of your comments.
