"I feel let down by mental health services"

About: Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust / Adult mental health

(as the patient),

I was diagnosed bipolar after marrying and moving here in 1983. I have 2 children and suffered with terrible post natal depression.

In 1981 I had my son and on my birthday I was sectioned to a psychiatric hospital for the first time in Dartford, Kent. I received ECT treatment and almost gave my children up for adoption.

In 1983 I married my second husband and the mental health system for Sittingbourne has been atrocious. I am now 66 years old and I feel my life has been wasted. I was unable to pursue a career even though I had a good Grammar School education in Dartford, Kent.

Now I am a widow and able to take out private medical insurance so that I get proper care when I feel poorly.
