"Patients with dementia not treated with compassion"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

If you shout at someone with dementia to shut up there are people dying here, because they’re shouting out in fear, then they and the other people with dementia will think they are the ones dying. No matter how bad the situation is currently in the NHS, there’s no excuse for saying such a nasty comment to my relative.

The staff at Pilgrim Hospital do not seem to help feed the patients who need feeding. Nurses and support staff do this at other hospitals, so that patients don’t starve. Instead at Pilgrim, I have seen food placed in front of patients, and taken away if the food is left. This is such a wicked thing to do. How can a patient who can’t feed themselves sit looking at food and have it taken away? It is a heartless thing to do.

Dear SJC123

I was very saddened to read your post and of the poor experience your relative, you and family members have endured. It falls short of the way we aim to treat people.

We would like to take learning from this series of poor experiences that you have mentioned so that we can make improvements. Would it be possible for you to provide more details so that we can look into matters. If so please could you contact me via patient.experience@ulh.nhs.uk

Regarding meals, there is a staff awareness campaign launching very soon within the hospitals surrounding nutrition and hydration, particularly in relation to patients living with cognitive impairments and learning disabilities.

We certainly do not wish anyone to feel that there has been a lack of compassion and we need to make changes to address this.

Regards

Sharon
