"Care for elderly completely deaf man at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital"

About: Heartlands Hospital / General surgery

(as a carer),

Today my father will have an endoscopic scan at HEFT.

The service he is under never seems to remember his communications limitations.

I am very worried that he is frightened and does not want to be awake for the procedure. We both worry that he will only have a local anaesthetic spray so the staff can communicate with him. He had a stroke that has affected his ability to make decisions - he is like an amiable 12 year old.

Attempts by me to get reassurance has not been helped by seeing a different doctor every time we are reviewed.

Dear JDT,

I have forwarded your concerns on to the endoscopy so that they can provide you and your father with appropriate assurances on arrival to the unit and discuss the treatment options with you.

Kind regards

Emma
