"Poor hospital care"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Trauma & Orthopaedics (Wards 1 & 5) University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I was sent up to Hairmyeres  by NHS 24 to get my badly swollen foot looked at as it was a purply/black colour.  The team at Hairmyres then sent me over to Wishaw General to get a blood and skin test done, which never ever happened. All they did was take a look at it and told me it was angry gout.  I told them I was sent here to get tests done and they told me it was pointless and told me to go home .

7 days later I was rushed to Hairmyres hospital via ambulance , put on drip straight away, overheard doctors  talking  saying this  was a serious case of cellulitis and I got rushed to Wishaw General where I underwent an emergency operation the next morning.  The doctor told me from the xray  taken at first hospital,  and the xray  at Wishaw General that what ever I had,  it had eaten the cartlidge away in my big toe.

The treatment I got after my first op was appalling.  After I was told I was moving ward I asked why , and I was told I was going home.  I told them  I couldn't because I was still on an IV drip.  I asked again why, and was told my bed was needed.  I  was sent  to surgical  short stay where I had another op.   I got locked in bathroom with no help and waited over 20 minutes banging and shouting for help to get out.   It was one  of the patients that eventually came and got me out, complained to head nurse got told it wouldn't happen again; a nurse would be there until I came out the next time.

I got trapped in yet again and a patient with a broken hip and on crutches got out of their bed to help me out.

I was told I was going for a third op and I told the surgeon I did not want to come back to this ward after op.  He asked me why, so told him what had  happened and he agreed.  I was put on another ward before my 3rd op where I was kept on iv  via a picc line fitted for 8 days until I got home.   All in I was in hospital for three and a half weeks .

At the end of my stay in hospital I feel I was poorly looked after by some of your nursing staff

Dear Steviemci

Many thanks for taking the time to share your experience on Care Opinion of your recent admission to University Hospital Wishaw. From what you have described, this is clearly not the standard of care that we aspire to and I would offer my sincere apologies to you.

It would be helpful if you could contact my Patient Affairs colleagues so that we can understand the issues in more detail, so that your feedback can be used with staff to review practice to avoid this happening in the future.

You can contact them PatientAffairs.Wishaw@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk or by phoning 01698 366558, quoting care opinion reference 904468 in any communication.

Kind regards.

Lesley
