"Dialysis Unit, ARI"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Renal Medicine (Kidney)

(as a service user),

I am a patient in the Aberdeen dialysis unit and I want to state my concerns about the state of the unit. I think it’s often far too hot for the staff who themselves are run off their feet. The floor has so many patches on it, it’s become a trip hazard.

The nursing and auxiliary staff do an absolutely amazing job with little to no help from other staff. The staff are often close to breaking point and I’ve seen nurses crying.

Dear Troyf87,

Thank you so much for taking the time to send us your concerns that you have witnessed within the Aberdeen dialysis unit. I'm glad to hear that the staff are doing an amazing job and that you are receiving good care.

With regards to the heating, this has been noted and raised by others. The heating is turned off completely during the summer and switched back on automatically in the autumn, but due to this autumn/winter continuing to be mild, this causes the unit to be too hot. The ward manager has had the engineers up to turn the heating down but it takes a little time to work out the correct temperature, as we would not want anyone to be cold, nor too hot. Hopefully we have managed to get to the right temperature now but if you continue to be too hot when in, please let the nurse in charge know and we will have the heating turned down some more.

The floor disrepair that you have seen, has already been noted and reported to the estates department for fixing. The flooring throughout ARI is currently being replaced on a rolling programme but it has not yet reached the dialysis unit but is on the plans to be done.

I am so sorry that you have witnessed staff to be distressed at their jobs and we do not want anyone to feel like this at their work. The ward manager has check all her team and offered support to the staff where needed.

Thank you again for bringing this to my attention and please let the ward manager know of any other concerns you have when in receiving treatment.
