I am 6 weeks pregnant and started bleeding and cramping yesterday. Due to the EPAT being closed on a Sunday I phoned first thing Monday morning and finally got through to speak to a midwife at an hour and half later.
I am sorry to say that the attitude of the midwife has left me upset and angry. There was no empathy or caring nature whatsoever. I am aware that I am most likely miscarrying and the member of staff did not offer any sympathies or concern for my well-being. They asked when my last period was and the date of my first positive test. I told them that I first got a positive HCG result 5 days before my period was due - again, I’m aware this was early but I had symptoms of pregnancy and was actively trying to get pregnant so was keen to find out.
The member of staff then asked me in a derogatory manner why I carried out the test on that date, implying that I shouldn’t have and it may have been incorrect. I advised them of my reasons why and assured them that I had tested regularly since then and my last positive result was 2 days ago. They then told me to watch and wait with the bleeding and do another test in a weeks time and to contact them with any issues. Again, I was aware that this would most likely be the advice given. However, not once did the member of staff show any concern given for my well-being or offer any support or reassurance.
6 weeks is very early in a pregnancy but that does not make it any less distressing when experiencing a miscarriage. This baby was very much wanted and my partner and I are devastated. I sincerely hope that the other staff at Wishaw Maternity are not desensitised and can offer their patients the appropriate support when experiencing pregnancy loss.
