"Kindness and empathy would certainly help"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Acute Oncology

(as the patient),

I have had two appointments with my oncologist recently.  I was very disappointed at their lack of empathy and the lack of explanation as to a plan for my treatment on my first visit, whilst my cancer is terminal (mesothelioma).

I was only offered chemotherapy and was told that immunotherapy was not offered under the NHS at present. They told me that if I had chemo it would possibly only give me an extra three months life expectancy.  I told them I would give it some thought. I decided to have a private consultation with another oncologist from Bristol who gave me a full explanation of my illness and how it could be treated to try and extend my life a little longer, this could include immunotherapy as line 2 which is offered on the NHS as a one dose treatment. He was extremely helpful and very caring and gave me more confidence to go ahead with the chemo.

On my second appointment yesterday with my first Oncologist, to sign the consent form, I once again found them to be very distant and I felt did not explain all the things they should have done at this meeting either.  All they did was give me a prescription to collect from the pharmacy and told me to sit in the waiting area and they would get one of the nurses to speak to me.  My wife went to the pharmacy to collect the prescription but was told there was a query and it may be some time, she waited over 45 mins before it was sorted out.

I am going ahead with my chemo, but felt I had to write something on here to express my disappointment at the lack of empathy and the way they dealt with me as a patient.  My wife was with me on both occasions and feels exactly the same as I do.  I know this is a very difficult job to do, to have to tell people bad news, but kindness and empathy would certainly help in this situation to lessen the blow, and not make you feel like you were just a number.

Dear DevonBoy,

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback and highlight the negative experiences you encountered when you were seen by your oncologist. I can only apologise that you were not shown the compassion and empathy that all patients should experience during every appointment at the Seamoor unit.

I am glad you sought a second opinion and that you are going ahead with treatment and I hope that you find your experience receiving chemotherapy through the Seamoor unit much more positive.

I have spoken to the oncology clinical lead to highlight your experiences and they will raise your concerns with the other oncologists as well as arranging for further training and supervision as we would like to ensure that no-one else has your experience.

Once again please accept my apologies and if you would like to discuss your concerns further please contact your nurse specialist who can pass your details on to me and I will be in touch.

Best Wishes

Rhea
