I was admitted into intensive care for a bad case of meningitis. While I was unconscious for the first 26 hours, the staff were incredibly kind and understanding after I woke up, offering me hot food and snacks whenever I felt like eating (which was not very often).
The nurses were also really empathetic to my pain and confusion, answering my questions with incredible patience, as well as being respectful of my requests. Where my requests could not be met, a valid reason was given, and a close alternative was provided. An example was the usage of the bathroom. Initially, the nurses were unsure if I was stable enough to walk to the bathroom and use it unsupervised. Although I requested to use said bathroom on my own, they declined and offered an alternative, the commode. I understood their reasoning and accepted their alternative, as it was what was best for me.
After I was significantly better and more stable, the ICU staff felt I was ready to be moved to the General Ward. Here, I was visited by doctors who were exceptionally kind and patient with my questions, as confused as they might have sounded, answering them in a way that was easy for me to understand. The nurses here too were kind and helpful.
