"Urgent operation without Covid Test"

About: Southend Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

I was to be given an urgent operation on Friday and went for my Covid Test today.

Despite trying several times I was unable tolerate the test, possibly due to past medical traumas.

I contacted the booking clerk of the urology department to advise them and they told me that the Covid testing centre told them that I had refused the test. Not correct, I tried several times and my husband was with me and witnessed my distress when I tried.

I was not offered any alternative method of either testing or perhaps self isolating for a period of time and my urgent operation has been cancelled.

I am very anxious and worried about what this means for my health.

Update posted by VJP1 (the patient)

I have had a response from PALS asking me to contact them, which I did today.

I contacted the urology department following my inability to tolerate my 7th December 2021 pre-op COVID test on the 8th December 2021 saying that I was willing to try another test. The staff member I spoke with, on 01702 411256, advised me that they would arrange this.

I have not heard anything, to date, and as my operation is urgent, I telephoned PALS both as a response to their request and in order to find out what is happening with my urgent operation.

PALS have assured me that they will contact urology and that I should hear something soon. PALS also advised me that my notes say that the hospital pleaded with me to have the test, this was on the 7th December 2021, but that I refused. This is because I was in a complete panic about the test and knew that if I tried again, on the same day, that it would be unsuccessful. This is why I telephoned again on the 8th December 2021 and discussed arranging another test and operation date. It appears that this call has not been recorded on my notes and I hope that this omission will now be corrected.

I need to have my operation urgently, referred by my GP because of blood in my urine, and I am very worried.

Hopefully PALS will be able to resolve and I will hear from Urology soon.
