"Poor explanations and aftercare"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care)

(as a service user),

I was admitted to Aberdeen Maternity Triage triage as a ? preterm labour. The midwife I met that night was lovely and very welcoming.  She put me at ease and explained as much as she could to me. Even moved me to a comfier bed as she didn’t feel right leaving me on the bed couches until they made a decision.

However the experience got worse from then, I felt I was just left in the room.  Midwives came in, put CTG on, never explained it just took it off and left. You never saw anyone from morning until evening.

I was terrified and nobody had really explained to me what was going to happen.  This is my second baby so I’m not clueless but I was made to feel like I was making my symptoms up.

One of the days a midwife was, well, quite unprofessional and unsympathetic. I was upset and they came in and asked why I was crying? I said well I’m worried and scared of what’s happening and they said that I should buzz? Just saying it might be nice for your midwives to even just pop in and say are you ok?

I felt like they believed I was a nutter and making it up on how I was feeling. They then took my venflon out and told me that was it. I got no advice on aftercare or if I would see my midwife again.

My stay in triage was fine until then.  I phoned my partner in tears because of the way I was made to feel. I work in the NHS myself and shouldn’t be made to feel like that.

Dear BabyBrain,

Thank you for taking the time to give feedback on your recent experience in Triage.

I’m pleased to hear that the initial part of your admission was a good experience for you and that you felt reassured and in safe hands. I am, however, disappointed to hear that the rest of your stay was not to the standard we would expect for women and families in our care. I would expect that, at a minimum, all women in our care know what the investigations they undergo mean, and that they feel well informed and understand any follow up, if required. Please accept my apologies that this did not happen in your case. I also apologise that you felt that the midwife was uncaring; this is not the impression we want anyone in our care to leave the ward with.

I will share your feedback, good and bad, with the team so that we can improve and help prevent your experience from happening again. Thank you again for sharing your experience.

I wish you all the best for the rest of your pregnancy.
