Two weeks ago my 81 yr old Mother, who lives alone and is normally independent, developed severe sciatica which impacted on her mobility; in particular her ability to go up and down stairs. As she needs to go the bathroom approximately 5-6 times a night, and her bathroom is downstairs, we (her family ) were very concerned regarding her risk of falling on the stairs at night; more so as she refuses to have a safety pendant to alert us if she fell. We hence wanted a commode for upstairs to abolish the risk of a fall on stairs at night. My call to access and information was answered immediately. The call handler was friendly and efficient, guiding me through her assessment. She was ' tuned in' to my concerns and the falls risks, recommending a pendant and offering to share information on providers with me . I also explained my Mum preferred to deal with her own affairs and for her to be the first point of contact, and she noted this and respected her wishes. Within 30 minutes of placing the call the Newry and South Armagh Integrated care Team phoned her and agreed to send her a voucher to pick up a commode from a local pharmacy. She had access to a commode in less than a week which allowed her to regain her independence at night ( we were having to stay with her ) . We , her family were also reassured that she was safe and wouldn't be at risk of a fall on the stairs at night. This helped to maintain her dignity and alleviate anxiety as she was worried she wouldn't make the bathroom on time. Thank you access and information and Newry and South Armagh ICT for an effective, efficient and responsive service that enabled my elderly Mother to safely maintain her independence and dignity and helped to alleviate my family's concerns about her falling on the stairs at night.
