"A story shared with permission"

About: Change Grow Live Cambridgeshire / Wisbech

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

Thankyou for reading this Special Care Opinion which is written post death of the Author with appreciated and respected permission from her mum, sadly after childbirth to her much wanted and loved daughter.

This Care Opinion story was written by herself about her journey, that she had reached her recovery and abstinence from heroin for her and her baby girl.

Her mother feels this is a story that is shared by many drug users and mothers / parents.

Mum shared that she will always see her daughters eyes in her granddaughter that she will now place special care to love and nurture as she knows her daughter would have done for her.

RIP Baby Girl, (from your heartbroken mum and step dad).

_________________________________________________

I have been a service user for about a year . I am in recovery for crack cocaine and heroin. I've recently discovered that I am pregnant and to be honest for a start I was forced by the court to comply. Myself and my partner were on a £600 a day habit. I was involved in criminal activities to support this habit. Lorraine was my first point of support, she was brilliant. She helped us start to make big changes. We settled on our methadone. after around 6 months my support worker changed to Dawn. Dawn has been brilliant, I could not have wished for a better person to support me and once my pregnancy was confirmed Dawn has been brilliant, accommodates me and always there to listen and reassure.

Me, I am adamant that my using days are over. I have my little girl to be thinking of. I have had so many meetings and Dawn has been by my side for them all.

Recovery is hard work which myself and my partner have had to first deal with but with the encouragement and support and straight talking we are in a place now that we never thought we would be  and a big part of that and us getting there is due to CGL and there invaluable support them and there staff have given us.

To know that Dawn is behind me and supports me means a lot to my recovery, such a brilliant lady and to know that she will be there for as long as we need her gives me peace of mind. Thankyou.

So writing this response is hard but nowhere near a hard as it is for the parents of this person who sadly died. For that I take huge strength that there are some amazing people out there managing life after such a close relative has passed away. Life is so cruel. facing up to challenges is what happened here and trying to make a future for themselves. This should be applauded.

But lets not forget that before passing on, this courageous person achieved what they wanted to in terms of reaching abstinence and that should never be forgotten. It is a life cut short with so many more memories which sadly will never be made.

I hope lots of people read this. Whatever the circumstances, don't give up. You can achieve what you want to. We can help, we really can! We will give everything we can to help you. Everyone one out there - You are more than this. You are more than drugs and alcohol. Everyone has the potential to achieve.

Go back to the top and read it again and I challenge you not to be inspired. Last word is a huge thank you to the family for sharing this story.
