"They made a daunting experience more easy to handle"

About: St John's Hospital / Cancer services Western General Hospital / Oncology

(as the patient),

After my cancer diagnosis where my prognosis was poor, I was assigned to the Western General for treatment but in order to start my treatment quicker as timing was important, my consultant arranged for me to start my treatment at St John’s Hospital which was closer to my home.

My treatment was started quickly and all of the staff without exception at the St John’s Cancer Centre were exceptionally friendly and made a daunting experience more easy to handle.

I had 2 treatments at St John’s before transferring to the Western.  I felt that the chemo ward in both hospitals was poles apart with St John’s providing a more personal experience.

My appointed Chemo Nurse (Julie) attended all my appointments with myself and Dr Barrie who was overseeing my treatment which helped in supporting me through a difficult time.  I found Dr Barrie to be down to earth, straight forward and easy to speak to and helped make my experience less daunting.

Overall, the experience was professional and friendly and the St John’s Cancer Centre made a positive impression.

Dear Diva58,

I manage the units both at SJH and the WGH. I will ensure that the team at SJH and Dr Barrie are aware of your comments. With regards the experience at the WGH and the different experiences I would be interested to hear your views, would you be happy to discuss?
