"Covid vaccine appointment"

About: NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde / Covid Vaccination Programme

(as the patient),

As someone who works in the NHS, I know the importance of having my Covid vaccine booster.  So I arranged it for the first date that I could have it at Renfrew Leisure centre.  I planned the date so I would have a few days off after it in case of any side effects.

When I arrived 10 minutes before my appointment time, there was a queue of people waiting outside and I was told by the person acting as steward that I could not have my vaccine as the nurses had said no one else could join the queue. I explained that I had an appointment but he stated that so did the people already in the queue.

After I was sent away, I saw several other people also being turned away.

I was very disappointed in my experience - I had trouble free visits for my first 2 vaccines elsewhere.  I would not have minded queuing but to be sent away when the vaccine is booked is outrageous - as the visits are pre booked, the clinic must know how many people are planned to attend.

I’ve managed to rearrange my appointment for a few days time and had to phone the vaccination help line 3 times before I was able to speak to someone as the line kept cutting out.  I had tried to rebook on line but was unable to because of the existing appointment on that night.

It was just such a waste of everyone’s time and money, particularly at a time when so many people are trying to get their Covid boosters

Dear pjrey

Thank you for getting in touch. I have shared your feedback with the Vaccination Team who would like to apologise for your experience at Renfrew Leisure Centre that left you feeling disappointed and annoyed. The last thing we would want to do would be turn away anyone from an appointment and we apologise that this happened to yourself. Thank you for bringing this to our attention so that we can learn from this and improve the experience at our Vaccination clinics.

I also apologise that you didn’t have a great experience calling the national line, just to let you know that there is also a local Glasgow line that you can also contact. The number for the local line is - 0800 917 6115.

Kind Regards

Nicole

Update posted by pjrey (the patient)

Thank you. I’ve since had my vaccination at Paisley and the vaccinator there has been at Renfrew on Saturday and they advised that there seemed to be have been too many people booked in at Renfrew so they were overwhelmed.

That shouldn’t happen and there should be checks to prevent this. I have rebooked and got my vaccine but my worry is that it put other people off. Staff should also not be put in that situation.

The session at Paisley on Tuesday was so well organised and I was in and out in less than 30 minutes and the staff were lovely.
