"Excellent support for my hysteroscopy"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Outpatients

(as a service user),

Yesterday I went to Antrim Area Hospital for my hysteroscopy. I had previously been to Whiteabbey and had a biopsy. This had been quite painful and so I was dreading this appointment. I already knew I was going to have to have another biopsy during this procedure and would also need the Mirena coil fitted. I was very anxious. I did a lot of research and found many horror stories. So I watched some YouTube videos of the procedure in the hopes that it would settle me seeing what will be done…big mistake! I will not be doing that again.

By the time I got to the waiting room I was extremely anxious.  A lovely nurse (I’m sorry I forget your name, I was so anxious) came out and escorted me in and by the time I was sitting in the room talking to her I was a little emotional and teary. She was fabulous and reassured me. She left and I settled myself and waited for the doctor.
I’m sorry doctor I forget your name too. In fact, for some reason the only name I remember is the student nurse.
Anyways the doctor was awesome. He explained everything to me. He explained as I had never given birth or been in labour that it may not be possible to do the procedure due to difficulty and pain. And he even reassured me that I was in the driving seat and if at any stage I needed to stop I only had to say and we would rearrange my appointment to a date with sedation.
When I got into the room and shuffled into position, lying down, legs in the air in supports and all my privacy on display I was suddenly distracted by the painted butterflies on the tiles above and the celebrities faces stuck on them. All insecurities left me and we embarked on a hilarious conversation about Simon Cowell's smile and my love for Gerard Butler, Ps I Love you and The 100/Sparta.
I completely relaxed and laughed and chatted away with all four staff members and before I knew it we were finished with nothing more than a few cramps and a wet bottom!
The next part were my coil was fitted was indeed a little painful but again the reassurance and chatter distracted me and it was over as fast as it began.
I left the department skipping down the corridor , all be it a little crampy, with a smile on my face.
I can’t thank the staff involved enough. I know that if it hadn’t have been for them and their distractions and humor I wouldn’t have been able to have managed that as well as I did.

I hope you get to see this or you hear about this somehow because I want to say a massive “Thank you” for making such an embarrassing and terrifying moment one of joy and hysterics! Honestly you are all amazing and the standard of care and support provided to me yesterday was excellent! I wish you all the best.

Hello Maggie231

Thank you for taking the time to provide such lovely feedback in relation to the care you received yesterday at OPD4 in Antrim. I am delighted that you had a such positive experience and the required procedures went well.

I will ensure that your comments are shared with all the staff within OPD4 as receiving such a positive compliment is really uplifting for staff and will make their day, especially during this pandemic.

It is great to read that you felt so supported by all staff as it can be very scary attending your appointments knowing that you require some procedures. The team in OPD4 are excellent and really can put any one at ease with their good humor and kindness. The ceiling tiles certainly provide a distraction too!.

Take Care

Helen
