"Excellent care and follow up after a colonoscopy at Dr Grays"

About: Dr Gray's Hospital / Gastroenterology (Stomach and Gut) General Practices in Grampian

(as a service user),

My partner had been picked up by the national bowel screening service in September as having need for a colonoscopy.

This was done by the very efficient Dr Hew and his team.

Dr Hew was very warm and approachable and gently explained that my partner has bowel cancer with a tumour that requires urgent removal.

Dr Hew acted quickly and referred my partner for a CT scan and and MRI scan which have been done

My partner has since been transferred to the care of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and chemotherapy due soon to shrink the tumour prior to further surgery to remove it.

Thank goodness that the National Screening services are working at full capacity compared to the local GP services in Moray that I feel require a major overhaul regarding their triage procedures and getting an appointment with a GP.

Perhaps an investigation would be in order to get something done.

My partner had been complaining of feeling unwell for the best part of 2 years and still not seen the GP and when he wanted to speak to the GP to inform them of the recent diagnosis was told that GP very busy and it would be 2 weeks before getting a phone appointment which is dire.

I on the other hand have also been recently diagnosed with a tumour which thankfully was picked up by a National screening service.

I too have had difficulty accessing a GP despite complaining of a cough and breathlessness for the best part of a year until my recent GP appointment which was scheduled nearly a month after learning of my own cancer diagnosis but was given short shrift by the GP who incidentally is at a different GP practice than that of my partner.

I really find it all quite terrible what is happening here in primary care and I think it should be looked at as it appears the politicians responsible must have a different NHS system to those of us in Moray, where the minister is telling us to go to A&E or the local pharmacy as the GPs are so overworked.

Perhaps they should drop into Boots in Elgin or the hospitals in Grampian Health Board sometime to see how overworked they are and then drop into the local doctors surgery( if they can gain entry that is)

Dear chamaeleonmc97

Thank you for using Care Opinion to share your recent experience in Dr Gray's Hospital, apologies for the delay in replying to you.

It was lovely to read your story following your partners appointments with Dr Hew and the team involved, your positive experience will be received graciously.

I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing difficulties with our GP colleagues in primary care, hopefully they will be able to feedback to you, unfortunately I am unable to reply on their behalf.

Your story goes a long way to show the importance of using the National Screening Services awarded to us to be assured that anything found is assessed and treated in good time. I hope your partner and you are both doing well and staying safe.

Take care

Diane

Dear Chamaeleonmc97,

I’m sorry to read both you and your partner have had recent cancer diagnoses – it must be a worrying time for you both. However, it is heartwarming to hear Dr Hew and his team acted quickly and your partner has been treated with a warm and gentle approach. I am also happy to read my colleague Diane will share your kind words with them.

I noticed you have shared your experiences of contacting your GP in another post and I’m sorry to hear you and your partner have both had issues despite being with different GP Practices. Most of the practices in Grampian are independent contractors with a separate complaints and feedback procedure to NHS Grampian. However, I would like to be able to share your feedback with the practices you visited, as it’s important for them hear how their patients are feeling. If you feel comfortable, could you contact me, confidentially, with the name of the practices you visited? I can be contacted by email: kirsten.dickson@nhs.scot or by text / telephone: 07885720267.

I’m glad to hear our national screening services are working well and wish you both all the best with upcoming treatments and recovery.

Take care,

Kirsten

Dear Kirsten

Dr Hew and his team are doing a sterling job at Dr Grays as is the very efficient Mr Bourne and his team at ARI and my partner and I feel we are both in good hands under the care of these consultants.

My partner is starting chemotherapy next week and I am having surgery the same week.

Please understand that your offer of feedback is appreciated.

My own GP appears to be getting their ship back on course and I will give the benefit of getting back to business as usual.

My partner on the other hand wants to get on with his treatment and not un necessarily rock the boat at the moment as it appears that reduced GP service is being sanctioned by government advice.

There appears to be a disconnect between the Right Care Right Place messaging and the large posters prominently displayed in some surgeries with the general gist of the message that it IS the Scottish Government recommendation that from July 2021 onwards due to Covid that GPs will not be doing as much face to face appointments or other services due to Covid measures taking place in the surgery.

Pharmacies, dentists and opticians are working at full capacity so why is the GP surgery any different?

This surely must be looked at as how can there possibly be Right Care in the Right Place if a patient cannot get access to the GP surgery!at the right time including the weekend?

I am sure on reflection that the GP practices involved will realise where improvements can be made and act accordingly.

Again we are both grateful for the care being received at both Dr Grays and at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
