Recently both myself and my husband attended University Hospital Wishaw A&E department to have our son reviewed. He had been pyrexial for 4 days and had became increasingly unwell and lethargic. His heart rate was racing and respiration rate also high. We were triaged quite quickly and first reviewed in one hour. A&E was extremely busy therefore we were extremely grateful for this.
We initially were taken in to A&E and sat in a cubical and reviewed by a doctor whom was lovely and made us feel at ease. My sons vital signs were not within the normal limit, both myself and my husband were extremely concerned and worried about our childs health. At one point his heart rate was 161 beats per minute and respiratory rate 42 with pyrexia. Of course he was given calpol and ibuprofen in A&E, treatment that both myself and husband had been providing at home for the past 4 days to try manage his symptoms without attending a busy hospital A&E department in a pandemic. He also had a cough however we were advised that due to having fever/ high temperature and a cough my son would require to sit in an area with possible covid patient. I found it very strange that he was not given a covid swab whilst in A&E, I was advised by the doctor that due to only having a certain amount of covid swabs that the result could be with you immediately these were kept for patients that were being admitted.
His vital signs were checked again by one of the student nurses on duty, i did not get their name as they never introduced themselves. I could see from the monitor that my sons heart rate was outwith normal limits and of course the machine was beeping to alarm, I asked why my sons BP was not being checked as he was clearly dehydrated from being sick and generally unwell. He also had not eaten for 4 days. I was asked if I would like my sons BP to be checked to which I had said yes please if possible.
We were then visited by a doctor on duty whom advised that my son would not be having his BP checked but when asked why they gave no reason, they were extremely rude and abrupt and I found this attitude appalling to the point it made me upset. This doctor then advised me that they didn't need my advice and left the cubicle and stormed off. I asked the student nurse to give me the doctor's name, this is when they came back to the cubicle and advised me of same. If working with the public, sick ones at that, I feel this attitude clearly needs to improve. There are some lovely members of staff within NHS whom ive had the pleasure of meeting however on this occasion the bad cancels out the good. Appalled at this attitude to have whilst working with vulnerable sick patients/ parents of sick patients whom need some support and empathy.
"my sick son and appalled at attitude of A&E doctor"
