"Young Daughter attending A&E"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

Attended with my 12 yr old. Wait was anticipated to be 6+ hours. Attending with breathing difficulties and was triaged fairly quickly and told to let receptionist know if there was a deterioration. After about 90 mins my daughter began to feel more unwell and I let the receptionist know, she alerted the nurses and my daughter was reassessed. Approaching midnight and reassurance given that although a long wait was ahead they would call paeds and see if she could be seen sooner. She was referred to paeds and within that hour we were taken up to ward 19/20.

Reassessed and monitored and then discharged with advice we could access the ward for 48 hours directly after discharge if required. From initial assessment to discharge we felt cared for despite staff being under immense pressure. As a health care worker myself I appreciate that there will be delays but staff kept us updated and informed. The doctor and nurse in ward 19 were very pleasant and put my daughter at ease. We had to call them mid afternoon the following day for advice and a doctor called us back swiftly and gave us advice which was very helpful.

Dear Buttercup7654,

Thanks so much for getting in touch with us to give us your feedback. It must have been a scary experience with your daughter and I'm glad the staff both in our Accident & Emergency Department and Paediatrics were responsive to your needs. The staff work really hard and I'm sure they will be delighted with your comments.

I'll make sure the staff at Ward 19 get this message and I hope your daughter (and you!) are feeling better.

All the best

Laura
