"Fracture Clinic"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics (wards 21-23)

(as a service user),

I was surprised to be discharged from the fracture clinic 3 days post fracture with very little advice eg how to use the crutches or for how long.  How long to use the boot.  They did say to call them if I needed to but no advice as to what sort of thing I might call for.  This is explained as patient led care. My problem is never having experienced a fracture before I don’t know what is normal or what level of pain/discomfort to expect.

I am now 11 weeks post fracture still with some pain, swelling and inflammation when walking even a short distance. I don’t know if this is normal and don’t want to be a nuisance asking perhaps obvious questions (that aren’t obvious to me) because I saw how busy the staff.  I think It would be very reassuring if there was some input even once or twice post fracture just to make sure things are progressing as they should be.

Dear Wigwambam

Thank you for getting in touch via Care Opinion.

As you still have questions about your fracture I would encourage you to contact the Fracture Clinic - please don’t think that you are nuisance. I will share your post with the Orthopaedic Team about the lack of discharge information and your suggestion of having a post discharge phone call.

Take Care

Nicole

Dear Wigwambam,

As the fracture clinic manager, I am disappointed that you have had this experience. We strive to ensure that patients are given the appropriate information and the contact number of the clinic should you have ongoing issues.

Would it be possible for you to contact me directly on 0141 314 6789 or email linda.blair2@ggc.scot.nhs.uk so that I can investigate fully the experience you had and also give you the answers to your questions.

Many thanks,

Linda
