"Staffing levels Eden ward Rampton"

About: Rampton Hospital / Personality Disorder Pathway

(as the patient),

As a ward which is Eden Ward, we have been informed that we should run on 7 staff due to this being a big ward and hoses 14 patients at the minute. But the last few months we have been running on 4 to 5 staff which then takes it to 3 and 4 during staff breaks. This leaves the day area and other areas sometimes locked off, and we also don’t get fresh air as we should because of staffing. We bring this up in meetings and get told by matrons and deputy matrons it will get sorted, then the next day they again take staff off us. This is the last straw I can go down to be listened too and hoping some one listens. I don’t feel safe some days. Our activity coordinator for the ward gets taken into nursing numbers or moved to another ward so we don’t get our activities. We get medication late, lunch and dinner late so its barely warm. Ward atmosphere is not good.

Hello,

Can I just say Thank you first of all for taking time to send your feedback via this way. Like you say this is your last straw as you have already mentioned this at meetings.

It is not always easy to bring up difficult things for you and others so thank you again for posting.

Hopefully someone will get back to you on this platform and see how your concerns and worries can be dealt with.

I will look out for it

hi There,

firstly thank you for sharing your Storey and I am sorry you at times feel unsafe.

I would like to say this will be " sorted" tomorrow but it is not that simple and want to respond with honesty.

The hospital is short of staff just like the rest of the NHS at present and we have a recruitment drive attempting to support an increase in staff to come and work with us. This will take time. The hospital managers review staffing on a daily basis and redeploy staff t where the highest need is on the day. Fortunately Eden have patients that are able to managed themselves more positively that those patients at the beginning on their treatment or admissions.

I thank you for supporting the hospital by managing you frustrations and working with staff.

The day are is often locked off as you have two day areas, one with a pool table so its safer to support patients in one day area than two. This is not helpful but is risk assessed to manage the rest of the hospital.

what we can say is that your food should be warm so I will look in to this and I will check to see how late your medication is to see if this is safe practice. As for fresh air the aim is that you get fresh air daily so will again see how we can support the to increase and possibly buddy with another ward to ensure this happens

thank you

adele

Thank you for sharing your storey, the ward manager arranged for a community meeting last Saturday to provide everyone the opportunity to talk about how they are feeling and also look at your concerns and how we can make improvements.

Thank you for communicating your concerns

Amanda
