"36 hours that myself and my husband will cherish forever"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Neonatology

(as a service user),

Words cannot express how grateful myself and my husband are for the exceptional care given to our infant son, Sean. He was born at 25+4 weeks gestation during an emergency c section at the Ayrshire Maternity Unit. I had went into premature labour after a haemorrhage at home. Due to his extreme prematurely he was transferred to the neonatal unit at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow as they are a tertiary care centre. He unfortunately was too early and became too ill to survive after a bleed into his lungs and brain. He lived for 36 hours only. 36 hours that myself and my husband will cherish forever.

The staff in the neonatal unit treated our son like their own, prior and after his death. They were so kind to him and us. Nothing was a problem. They did absolutely everything in their power to save him. Dr O'Shea was amazing. She possesses amazing knowledge and skill but sadly nothing she did could save our son. Ultimately the best that could be done was to allow Sean to pass away with dignity and in comfort. Among the staff, Sean's nurse (Caitlin) the day of his passing stands out. She arranged memorial photos for us. She also assembled a memory box with prints and his few possessions from the time spent in the unit. She bathed and dressed Sean for us, treating him with no less care/attention than she would have if he'd still been alive. Sister Lorna has also been very helpful in organising casts of Sean's hands and feet. She also helped with organising his transfer back to Ayrshire and in providing emotional support to us. We have been able to raise money for the unit which we will bring up to Glasgow soon. No amount of money or praise can thank the staff enough though. You've left us with a lifetime of happy memories in the form of his memory box which we will cherish. We are also safe in the knowledge that he passed away in comfort, and that absolutely everything was done to save him.

Dear HM86,

We would firstly like to convey our deepest and most sincere condolences to you both. We cannot begin to imagine the pain and heartbreak you and your husband have experienced at the loss of your precious son, Sean.

We were deeply touched by all you have written in support of the services provided to Sean during his time with us here in Glasgow. It was truly our honour and privilege to provide that care at such a difficult time for you all.

I can share that our Director, Clinical Lead and Chief Nurse have taken this opportunity to pass on their personal thanks to both those you have named, and wider neonatal team. We are proud of the compassionate care they provided.

We are struck by all you have said, and are so grateful at this most difficult of times you are thinking of us and taking time out to provide both charitable endeavours and thanks. The significance of that is truly enormous. Thank you.

On behalf of everyone here at RHC I send our sincerest best wishes to you.

Coral
