"Best care possible for my Gran"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Surgical Assessment Unit

(as a staff member posting for a carer/relative),

My gran was admitted to Forth Valley Royal Hospital a few weeks ago. Myself and my mum were very concerned as we had a bad experience from start to finish when she was admitted a few months before. However this time was a  completely different experience she was in ward B31 for most of her stay and I cant thank the staff in there enough for everything they did. They were so kind and caring everyone nurses, auxiliary nurses, students and domestics etc.

My gran can get really confused and forget things so most things have to be run by myself or my mum so we can explain to her. This time around every staff nurse and doctor we spoke with listened to our concerns and acted upon them and we were not just dismissed. My gran was having hallucinations. seeing things that were not there. and was so scared some days. This was totally out of character for her she forgets things and gets confused normally but nothing like this but the doctors and nurses took on board everything we were saying as we see my gran everyday they had only just met her so do not know what she is normally like.

One day I broke down in the ward as it was so upsetting to see her like that and the nurse, I cant remember her name, was so kind. The whole time my gran was in B31 we were kept informed and updated with what was going on. We had phone-calls from her respiratory nurse, occupational therapist dietitian and nurses etc. The communication was excellent. It makes such a difference in such difficult times to be kept informed of what is happening and to be involved in her care. We didn't even have to express our concerns about her being at home on her own as they could clearly see she was in need of some help

Myself and my mum had already managed to get carers in place ourselves, as,  after the last time she was in as our concerns we totally dismissed. But we were reassured that she would not get home until her care package was restarted and they felt she could be doing with more help and have tried to increase her carers as she only had them twice a day before. Even the ward sister Julie was involved in contact with the care team. It was so reassuring for me and my mum and we really felt this time she was getting the best care possible.

It really has restored our faith as we felt my gran had been let down badly by the NHS and the care she received the last time around. So we would like to say a massive well done to all the staff in ward B31 you guys are doing a great job. We cant thank you enough for everything you did over the 2 weeks my gran was in. She is now back home and doing so much better. Once again thank you so much. We really do appreciate everything.

Thank you for your kind words regarding the high quality and compassionate care that you felt your gran had received. It is heart warming to hear such positive feedback and I will certainly will share with the rest of the team.

Glad to read that your gran is back home and recovering well.

best wishes Julie
